Situated on the tip of the Italian Riviera coastline, the fishing village of Portofino truly is a place that Italian holiday dreams are made of. The inverted U-shaped bay has a shore lined with colourfully-painted buildings, fishing boats and chic yachts. There’s no beach in Portofino itself, with holidaymakers choosing to drive a bit further down the coast to visit Paraggi for a beach day in its sandy cove.

Holidays to Portofino can be the epitome of glamour, which is why it’s been popular with celebrities since the 1950s. Film stars to pop stars from the USA and UK have journeyed to Portofino for a summer holiday, with the likes of Elizabeth Taylor and grace Kelly often spotted enjoying cocktails at the Belmond Hotel Splendido. Starting out as a 16th century Benedictine monastery, it’s now a 5 star hotel offering views over the bay from its private gardens and rooms furnished with chic Italian décor.

It’s widely believed that Portofino became fashionable thanks to the 1922 novel The Enchanted April, which later went on to become an Oscar-winning film in the early 1990s.It’s also believed that is inspired Sir Clough Williams-Ellis to recreate its beauty more than a thousand miles away in North Wales, where he designed and built the village of Portmeirion which bears a strong resemblance.

One of Portofino’s most well-known landmarks isn’t on land; in fact it can only be seen underwater. The Statue of Christ of the Abyss was created to protect fishermen and scuba divers and in memory of Dario Gonzatti, the first Italian to use SCUBA gear. It was placed in its current location in 1954, at a depth of 17 metres in an inlet.
