Hamburg Germany poster print
Situated in Northern Germany, the city of Hamburg is one of the most populous cities in Germany (at just under 2 million residents, second only to Berlin) and has one of the busiest ports in all of Europe. Officially called the ‘Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg’, its name reflects the city’s history as a member of Hanseatic League and a free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire.
Visitors tend to be most drawn to Hamburg in the summer months when the weather is most pleasant, reaching around 22 degrees Celsius. However; the chillier month of December are becoming equally as popular, when the city basks in the warm glow of the annual Christmas markets.
The view of Hamburg in our poster design is looking across the Elbe River towards the city’s skyline. The green-roofed tower that can be seen is Hamburger Rathaus, the City Hall. Completed in 1897 after more than a 40 year construction period, this beautiful building still houses many original government functions, such as the Mayor’s office and meeting rooms for Parliament. Just behind City Hall is the tower of St Jacobi Kirche, James Church. Gothic in style, the Church’s origins go back as far as the 13th century, with the final structures being built by 1827.
