The name Angkor Thom literally translates to great city which makes it very accurately named indeed. It was the last known capital city of the Khmer Empire and was originally established in the 12^th century by King Jayavarman VII. Situated on the west bank of the Siem Reap River in Cambodia, the site now attracts more the 2 million tourists every year.

At the centre of the city is a main square known as Victory Square, with other sites clustered around. The city is surrounded by a wall and flanked by five entry towers, each standing 75 feet high crowned by four heads. Each of the heads face in a different direction and are thought to represent the rulers of the 4 cardinal points at the summit of Mount Meru.

The most popular building in Angkor Thom is the Bayon temple, which is constructed across 54 buildings that are covered with 216 faces. With its maze of tunnels, rocks and block-up doorways, it's a great place to literally get lost in history! One of the other tourist highlights is The Victory Gate at the eastern wall of the city, which is what can be seen in our poster design. It's believed they were named because it was the gate that King Jayavarman VII sent his army through into battle against Champa, enemy of the Khmer empire. It's from the Victory Gate that visitors seize the opportunity to capture photos of the iconic Buddhist faces.
