Kefalonia Greece Canvas Print
A mere hop, skip and a boat ride away from Zakynthos, the island of Kefalonia is the stuff Hollywood blockbuster dreams are made of. No, really; the island shot to fame in the early noughties as the main location for Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, the war time romance starring Penelope Cruz and Nicholas Cage.
Since it shot to fame holidays to this stunner of an Ionian isle have rocketed, and for good reason. The pace of life here is still pretty slow so it’s not somewhere you’d come to enjoy raucous nights out, however the unrivalled scenery and array of Blue Flag beaches make it a place you’d be more than happy to immerse yourself in for some well-earned rest and relaxation.
As the largest island of its cluster, Kefalonia has many great places to stay and resort hotpots, though it’s difficult to pinpoint ‘the best one’ as they all have much to offer. The capital of Argostoli (on the Western tip of the map and very close to Kefalonia airport) is like a sliver of a Caribbean dropped into the Mediterranean – home to local fisherman bringing in fresh catch every day, quaint local stores, thriving café scene, and a large population of Green and Giant Loggerhead sea turtles. A little further North and you’ll hit Myrtos beach, which is easily the most popular beach on the island and creates stiff competition for best beach in the whole of the Med.
Couple all of that with the amazing summer weather of Greece, and we’re sure you’ll agree that there were some very good reasons that this Greek paradise was chosen to become a staff of the silver screen.
