Lauded as a playground for the rich and famous and less than a mile long, the city-state of Monaco is small but very mighty!

It is history dates back to the 6th century as part of the Phocaean Greek colony and was originally known as Monoikos, because of an ancient myth that Hercules passed through the Monaco area and turned away the previous gods. Its current popularity began to rise in the late 19th century thanks to a new railway connection to Paris and the opening of the citys first casino. People may come for the gambling and glamour, but they keep coming back for the weather; which has been known to peak in the mid-30s at the height of summer.

The most famous events held in Monaco is the Monaco Grand Prix, which takes place through the streets of the city every year. Often regarded by competitors as one of the most demanding tracks because of its elevation changes and tight corners, the track takes about six weeks to set up and another three weeks to dismantle.

Since ancient times, much of the city's activity has centred on Port Hercules, which is the inspiration behind our poster design. Covering almost 40 acres and completed in 1926, the port is large enough to provide anchorage for up to 700 vessels. Many of the celebrities that visit Monaco in the summer months can be seen relaxing or partying on one of the many glamorous super yachts docked in the harbour or just out to sea.
