Athens is the capital city of Greece and home to more than 3 million residents. A hub for Philosophy, learning and the arts, its officially one of the worlds oldest cities with a history dating back at least 3,400 years. Birthplace of the modern Olympic Games, the city has hosted the event 3 times between 1896 and 2004. The weather in Athens is fairly pleasant all year round (although it has been known to experience short periods of heavy snow in the winter months) with temperatures creeping up to 28 degrees Celsius in the height of summer and dipping to around 10 degrees in the winter.

Whilst still embracing its ancient architecture, Athens has morphed into a cosmopolitan city that is a popular city break destination. As well as many museums and galleries, visitors can enjoy trendy restaurants and beautiful beaches dotted around the city. Athens is also the gatekeeper to the rest of Greece so is great to combine with a stay on one of the many beautiful Greek islands, with ferries taking visitors to well-known tourist hotspots such as Mykonos, Naxos, Crete and Zakynthos.
