The city of Colombo is home to more than 5 million people, making it the largest by population in Sri Lanka. It was made the country’s capital in the early 19th century, and even though administrative functions were moved to nearby Kotte in the 1970s, it still remains Sri Lanka’s commercial capital.

Colombo  boasts a ridiculously steady temperature (between 16 – 35 degrees Celsius all year round) but experiences severe periods of rain in the spring and autumn months, when rainfall could reach a huge 16 inches in a single month.

The city has a beautiful skyline and attracts tens of thousands of tourists every year. There’s a range of hotels on offer for every kind of price point and grade of luxury, from the simple to the opulent. The flight time from the UK is roughly around 10 hours to Bandaranaike International Airport, named after the country’s Prime Minister in the later 19502.

The tall building seen in our poster design is the Lotus Tower (named because of its unique shape), sometimes referred to as Colombo Lotus Tower, and has become something of a symbolic landmark for the country. At 350 metres high it’s the 19th tallest tower in the world and is used for communication, leisure and general observation. The tower stands in front of Beira Lake in the centre of Colombo, which is surrounded by many of the city’s big businesses. The lake was given a Portuguese name following their occupation of the area (along with the English and Dutch) in colonial times.
