Galle Fort is located on the Southwest coat of Sri Lanka, around two-hour drive from Colombo. Part of the quaint seaside town Galle, it was originally built in the late 16th century by the Portuguese before being fortified by the Dutch almost 100 years later. Today, it’s been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and there’s call (from both the residents and Sri Lankan government) for it to be made one of the modern wonders of the world.
It’s not hard to see why the locals are so proud of the area; look at any images and you’ll agree it looks absolutely charming! Tidy whitewashed buildings topped with terracotta rooftops framed by lush greenery and the cobbled walls of the old (yet very well preserved) fort. Also close by is the home of Galle International cricket stadium, which is considered one of the most picturesque places to enjoy the sport because it’s fringed by Indian Ocean on two sides.
The Galle lighthouse is probably one the area’s most iconic landmarks, featuring on many a traveller’s holiday snaps, and now our poster design as well! As Sri Lanka’s oldest light station, it was constructed in 1939 after the original (built in the late 19th century) was destroyed by fire. The lighthouse has become something of a tourist attraction in its own right for visitors of Galle Fort, thanks to its favourable position and majestic appearance against the Galle landscape.
