Procida Italy poster print

As a teeny little island (less than 2 square miles small) in the Bay of Naples, Procida has remained a relatively unknown spot. However, it has officially been named as Italys Capital of Culture for 2022; becoming the first island to receive the honour and beating nine other small towns and cities in the process. With its array of candy-coloured buildings, winding narrow streets and traditional Italian nature, the place is easily as enchanting as more popular coastal areas like Positano. Sitting between the well- known islands of Capri and Ischia, Procida has tough competition, but it stands beautifully on its own merit.

Meaning poured out in ancient Greek, the name is derived from the Latin word Prochyta, the island is home to a little over 10,000 permanent residents and is widely favoured by Neapolitans for a summer holiday destination. Despite being relatively unknown to tourists, Procida has had more than a few moments of stardom in its time, starring in more than 30 films. The most famous are the 1963 Richard Burton / Elizabeth Taylor film Cleopatra, and 1999's The Talented Mr Ripley. Writers have drawn inspiration from the area too; with several novels using Procida as their setting.

Enjoying the panorama from Terra Murata, the fortified Medieval village at the highest point on the island, is on the must-do list for any visitor (grab yourself a beer or Aperol Spritz from the nearby food truck too and you have a near-perfect afternoon of sightseeing). Overlooking the Marina di Corricella with lines of fishing boats, calm waters and birds-eye view of the colourful townscape below, this view could pose hot competition for the iconic blue domes of Santorini!
