When you picture a typical ski resort in your head, you'll probably conure up something that looks a lot like Val d'Isere. Chocolate-box looking chalets, tick. Snow covered streets bathed in a glow of twinkling snowy fir trees, check. Breath-taking mountain backdrop, check.

This tiny French town turned ski meccas origins date back to 1664 when it was first built, but has since morphed into a location famous for some of Frances best skiing conditions with an exciting apres ski scene to boot.

With an array of challenging piste and off-piste itineraries, it is the perfect playground for the more advance skier, however there are also more than enough pistes that great for lower experience levels too. Those who'd like to try a different kind of snow-based activity are also well catered for, with snowmobiling, paragliding and guided snowshoe hikes readily available.

The social scene in Val d'Isere is a little on the pricey side, mainly due to the fact its one of the worlds most famous ski resorts, but it is hard to beat. Start by choosing from a host of dining styles, ranging from relaxed eateries to fancy bistros. After dinner you can move on to one of the many chic bars or nightclubs to party the night away, with most staying open until sunrise.
