The picture-perfect Swiss town of Zermatt is known as the home of iconic landmark, the Matterhorn. This rock tooth mountain stands alone on the horizon and acts as a magnet for alpinists, aesthetic emblem, mountain with ideal proportions according to the official tourist website. A trip on the mountain railway or by cable car provides great views of both the Matterhorn and Zermatt tucked below.

The town itself dates all the way back to the 16th century, which is evident in the traditional wooden buildings that look like they are be right at home in a Hans Christen Andersen fairy tale. The narrow streets are car free (though you should still watch out for the odd horse-drawn carriage or electric cart) and filled with shops selling local delights such as chocolate and wood carvings (including the infamous Swiss export, the cuckoo clock). As with many a well-heeled ski resorts, you will definitely stumble across a designer store or two as well.

Skiing in the area isn't just restricted to Switzerland. Oh no. In one day, you can ski over to Cervinia for lunch, dine out on an obscene amount of pizza/pasta/prosecco before heading back to Zermatt in time for apr̬es ski! Visitors can also take on the challenge of the Matterhorn Ski Safari - covering 10,000 to 12,000m of altitude without skiing the same slope OR taking the same lift twice.
