Ambleside England poster print

Sitting at the head of Lake Windermere, the village of Ambleside is a popular town as part of the Lake District. Its name comes from the Old Norse word Amelsaetr which literally translates as river sandbank summer pasture.

Many holidaymakers opt to stay in a cottage, and they are usually spoilt for choice with many styles to choose from chalet style, lake front, traditional or country chic. Despite being small, Ambleside is blessed with a decent amount of pubs and restaurants serving up hearty food and with a side of traditional Cumbrian charm.

A short walk from the village is Stock Ghyll Force, a 70 foot natural waterfall. A carpet of daffodils grows under the trees there each spring, adding to the spectacular scene. Over Stock Ghyll beck you'll find one of the most photographed scenes in the lakes, Bridge House, a 17th century building owned by the National Trust.

As well as being very beautiful, Ambleside is very community spirited and hosts a variety of activities throughout the year. Ambleside Sports is one of the most well-known traditional countryside sports fairs in Cumbria, where visitors can also watch a spot of traditional Cumberland Wrestling. A little further north is the Rydal Sheepdog Trials & Hound Show, which attracts people from around the country.
