Close to the airport and a magnet for cruise ships, Las Palmas is not only easy to get to but its pretty darn good once you are there. As Gran Canarias capital city, you'd expect it to be one of the most impressive places on the island, and that is exactly what it is.

One of the first things you will notice about the city is its beautiful, sprawling beach (which is why we had to include it in our image) however if you can take your eyes off it for a second you will also see the gorgeous colour popping buildings sitting neatly on the hillside.

If you manage to tear yourself away from the beach (that frankly gives the Copacabana a run for its money) there are several beautiful gardens that are a dreamy place to wander and enjoy some traditional Canary architecture and botanical plants.

If history if your thing the area of Vegueta is the place to head learn about Christopher Columbus and his stop in Las Palmas at the Casa de Colon, the Museo Canario and old market that dates back to 1854. Keen shoppers will have a great time too; there are no less than there four large commercial centres and four markets to choose from.

Some of the best gastronomy dishes the Canaries have to offer can be had right here in Las Palmas including papas arrugadas co mojo (Canarian potatoes with mojo sauce), suspiros de Moya (local pastries) and taperio (tapas and aperitifs). If you are a meat lover you can also indulge in some of the islands more carnivorous dishes like suckling pork, marinated rabbit or goat.
