Osaka Japan poster print
The city of Osaka is situated in a bay on the South coast of Japan. With a population of more than 2.6 million, it’s the third most populous city in the country after Tokyo and Yokohama.
With a varied history stretching all the back to the Jōmon period in 7,000 BCE, Osaka is considered to be one of the first places where inhabitants settled and is probably why it was regarded as the country’s economic hub in its very early stages. Today, the city has developed into a thriving area that Forbes declared to be one of the most expensive citied in the world in 2020, alongside Tokyo.
The weather in Osaka is a humid subtropical climate – much like the UK it has four distinct seasons and is coldest in the winter months when temperatures dip to around 9 degrees Celsius. In summer time temperatures soar to around 27 degrees, but due to the humidity it often feels much hotter than this.
Our poster design shows the stunning Osaka Castle, which is one of Japan’s most famous landmarks. Completed in 1597, the main tower is built on two raised platforms and is seen to be five stories high from the outside (there’s actually a further three stories inside). The outer moat (there’s also a moat inside the grounds) surrounds the entire structure and is made up of 4 individually water-filled sections that represent North, South, East and West. The castle’s grounds cover a whopping 15 acres and contain a total of thirteen structures that the Japanese government considered to be “important cultural assets”.
