On the West Coast of the United States in California State, the city of San Francisco is a vibrant city thats part of music, film and popular culture. Originally founded in the 18th century by the Spanish, it them gained independence and became part of Mexico before eventually being claimed as part of California for the United States in 1846.
The residents of San Fran always seem to be happy and cheerful, and we may just know the reason why. In 2020, San Francisco was named as the city with the highest salaries and disposable income in the world, outstripping many other power players including New York and London.
San Francisco has appeared in more than its share of film and TV shows. Some of the most popular include Dirty Harry (1971), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and Mrs Doubtfire. The house featured as the family home in Mrs Doubtfire still remains a very popular tourist stop in the city to this day.åÊ
We have chosen the iconic Golden Gate Bridge as the subject of our design, which for many is the internationally recognised landmark of the city. Touted as the most photographed bridge in the world, it first opened in 1937 and at that time was the longest and tallest suspension bridge in the world.
Named after the Golden Gate, the strait of water it stretches over, the bridge connects San Francisco city to Marin County. The other landmark the city is probably most well-known for is Alcatraz Island; home of a former federal prison with military grade fortification until the early 1960s. The strong currents and cold waters of San Francisco Bay made the prospect of prisoners escaping virtually impossible, and today the island is still visited by thousands of tourists each year.
